About us and how we work
History Unlocked is an independent history publication. We tell the stories of people, events and civilisations of the past in a narrative way, but every text is built on documented, verifiable facts.
Who runs the project
History Unlocked is run by a small editorial team based in Italy, coordinated by the project's founder. Articles carry no individual byline: editorial responsibility for every piece lies with the newsroom as a whole, working to a single verification standard.
The project is self-funded and supported by advertising. No content is paid for, sponsored or influenced by third parties. Should we ever publish sponsored material, it will be clearly labelled at the top of the article.
How an article is made
Every article starts from a set of verified historical facts stored in our internal database: dates, places, people, figures and quotations, each linked to the source it comes from.
The text is then drafted on that basis, with AI tools used as a writing aid, never as a source of information. The AI introduces no facts of its own: it works exclusively on data verified beforehand.
Before publication every text goes through a human review that checks factual accuracy, the absence of anachronisms and the clarity of the writing. Articles that fail the check are rejected and never go live.
Our use of artificial intelligence
We believe transparency on this point is part of a publication's credibility. We use AI to produce a first draft, to translate into the site's six languages and to search for public-domain imagery.
We do not use AI to decide what is true. Selecting facts, choosing sources and granting final approval remain human decisions.
Corrections and errors
History is continuously studied and rewritten, and mistakes are possible. When an error is reported to us we verify it and, if confirmed, correct the article and update its last-modified date.
If you spot an inaccuracy, write to us: documented reports always take priority over the rest of our inbox.
Our principles
- Documented facts only: no invented reconstruction presented as history.
- Headlines that spark curiosity, articles that keep the headline's promise.
- No undisclosed sponsored content.
- Public and prompt correction of reported errors.
- Respect for reader privacy: we never sell personal data.
